Ponsonby House

Ponsonby House

The inspiration for this project was to transform an ageing courtyard pool into a larger, more functional retreat that better suited family living while preserving the intimate character of its urban setting. Carefully positioned to strengthen the connection between the home and garden, the renovated pool creates a seamless visual extension of the indoor living spaces and serves as the focal point of the courtyard.

A clean rectangular form maximises swimming space within the compact site, while a fully tiled mosaic interior brings clarity, depth and vibrant water colour to the landscape. Natural stone paving, frameless glass fencing and lush tropical planting work together to create a private oasis, balancing contemporary design with the relaxed atmosphere of a resort-style retreat. Wide entry steps provide both practical access and a comfortable space for relaxation and socialising.

Despite the challenges of working within a confined urban environment, the project required the careful integration of part of the original pool structure to protect the nearby house foundations while significantly expanding the pool footprint. The result is a refined and highly functional outdoor sanctuary that combines innovative construction, quality craftsmanship and timeless design to elevate everyday living. This project was recognised as the Renovation Project of the Year and received a Gold Award at the SPASA Awards of Excellence.
